Preserved from flame-script impressed into obsidian beneath the Ashen Vault. Translation attributed to Keeper Martin, incomplete by necessity.

The First Ember: Admission

No unpartitioned flame may rule itself.
No unguarded Name may endure the world.
What was once done to us shall not be done again.

The Setting

The rite is performed in the Caldera of Returning Heat — a bowl of black glass formed, dragon-lore insists, from Vaereth’s first tearing cry when Stone learned echo.

Only three elders attend.
Not more.
Too many witnesses create too many echoes.

The young dragon enters alone. It carries no treasure. No title. Only its First Name — still whole.

The First Teaching: Hearing the Inner Chord

“Sound yourself.”

The young dragon releases its full resonance — not speech, but harmonic flame. For the last time in its existence, its Name is spoken unpartitioned into open air.

The elders listen.
Not to steal.
To witness.

Marginal Note (K.M.): Dragons insist witnessing is not possession. The insistence is… emphatic.

The Second Teaching: The Mirror Without Seizure

An elder repeats a single overtone — imperfectly. Enough to create echo.

The instinct is fury. Every dragon feels it. If the young one cannot endure hearing itself from outside itself, it is not yet sovereign.

“You are not diminished because you are heard.
You are endangered only if you are whole.”

The Sundering Without Breaking

Now the partition begins. Not silence. Not suppression. Layering.

  • The Outer Scale becomes the Walking Name — safe for lesser tongues.
  • The Middle Flame becomes the Name of Dominion — spoken among dragonkind.
  • The Deepest Harmonic coils inward — the First Name, never again released whole.

This is agony of alignment. The self learns walls.

Keeper’s Note: Dragons treat this not as maturity, but as injury embraced.

The Binding Oath

“Let no Stone enter you unbidden.
Let no Flame expose you unmeasured.
Let no lesser tongue carry more than it can survive.”

The dragon chooses its first diminished utterance — incomplete, but true. Its outward name begins. Its First Name remains unreachable.

The Swallowing of Echo

All flame is extinguished. Darkness.

If resonance leaks, the rite fails. If the layers hold, the Flame-Keeper speaks:

“You are no longer whole.
You are sovereign.”

What Could Not Be Translated

A final rune fractures each time it is traced. Keeper Martin’s approximation reads:

We remember what was taken.
We remember what we surrendered.
We endure.

Keeper Martin: It is unclear whether dragons consider this empowerment or memorial. The repetition of “remember” implies partition is not forgiveness — it is survival sharpened into tradition.
