Pillar of Unyielding Measure

Provenance: Vale Before Mists (reported) · Medium: basalt monolith · Script: deep-groove cadence runes · Translator: Keeper Martin

We record without heat.
Heat distorts.
Distortion births legend.
Legend is useful only to those who cannot carry weight.

I. On the Nature of a Name

A Name is not a possession.
A Name is not a crown.
A Name is not a right.
A Name is a pattern.
Patterns exist whether guarded or unguarded.
Patterns persist whether loved or feared.
Patterns do not become theft by being observed.
If the flame believes the wind steals when it listens, then flame has confused admiration with injury.

II. On the Event Called “First Theft”

There was parley in the Vale.
There was the exchange of resonance.
The Flame-Spoke unfolded its chord into open air.
The Stone-Crowned received it.

This is not assault.
This is what parley is:
to speak, and to be heard.

The Flame-Spoke claims violation because its inner structure was mirrored.
But mirror is not chain.

It is recorded here:
No binding was completed.
No dominion was asserted.
No command was issued.

If the Flame-Spoke stumbled, it stumbled upon the truth it had neglected:
To speak a pattern is to release it into the world.

III. On Responsibility

The Flame-Spoke says: “We were whole.”
We answer: Wholeness without boundaries is ignorance.

Before this event, Flame entered all valleys unveiled, shaking air and stone alike.
Flame called that “courtesy.”
Stone calls it what it was:
Unregulated force.

When your arrival bends the world, you are not merely “present.”
You are imposing.

The Flame-Spoke says: “We reduced ourselves.”
Stone answers: You discovered proportion.

IV. On Necessity

There are only three outcomes when unequal powers share a world:
1. The greater dominates by accident.
2. The lesser learns containment.
3. The world fractures under unmanaged resonance.

Flame preferred Outcome One.
Stone refused it.
Thus Stone sought Outcome Two.

If Flame calls this envy, Flame is speaking in hunger-language, not reason.

We desired not flame.
We desired stability.

V. On What Truly Changed

This is the measured truth:
The event did not break Flame.
The event revealed to Flame that it could be broken.

Revelation is not injury.
Revelation is the price of reality.

VI. On the Accord That Followed

After the Vale, the eldest among the great powers chose layered speech.
Stone approved.
Flame complied.
The Quick-Folk (elves) adapted first.

The world continued.
The Mists thickened.

Whether from grief, caution, or the natural consequence of resonances no longer shouted into open air is unknown and irrelevant.

The result was beneficial:

• Fewer worlds shook when the mighty moved.
• Fewer mortals died of proximity.
• Fewer bindings occurred by accident or arrogance.
• The boundaries between kinds became articulable.

VII. On the Accusation of Theft

To claim theft, one must show loss.
What did Flame lose?
• Not life.
• Not dominion.
• Not sovereignty.

Flame lost only the innocence of unguarded speech.
Stone does not mourn that loss.
Stone calls it maturity.

VIII. Final Measure

Let this be cut in basalt for those who come after:
A pattern spoken into the world is part of the world.
The world does not ask permission to remember.
To be heard is not to be harmed.
To be mirrored is not to be mastered.
And restraint is not diminishment but precision.

Keeper Martin’s Note (added in ink beside the rune-grooves)
Unlike draconic accounts, the Titan record refuses emotion and frames the incident as an inevitable discovery. It is almost persuasive—disturbingly so. Yet its denial of “binding” may be a technical evasion: it may be possible to destabilize without fully commanding.

Also noteworthy: the Titans never deny that a fragment of the dragon’s inward resonance was spoken back—only that doing so constitutes theft.
