In the Vale Before Mists

Flame spoke.
Stone answered.
The air did not understand what passed between them.
There was no army.
There was listening.
There was pride.
There was assumption.
The Dragon believed its wholeness was gift.
The Titan believed structure was neutral.
Both were correct.
Both were incomplete.

When the inward chord was returned through foreign breath, the valley shifted.
Not because of power.
Because of recognition.
For the first time, a being heard itself from outside itself.
It is not the echo that wounds.
It is the knowing that echo is possible.

After, the Dragons burned hotter.
After, the Titans grew quieter.
After, the world felt smaller.
We, who were young, learned swiftly.
We did not withdraw from speech.
We thinned it.
We did not fracture our Names.
We layered them.
A root beneath soil.
A trunk in air.
A leaf in light.
Let those who walk only among leaves believe that is the whole tree.

It is said the Mists thickened in sorrow.
This is not so.
The Mists thickened because sound no longer traveled unbroken between worlds.
Resonance shortened.
Distance grew.
We began to age.

No theft occurred.
No innocence survived.

So we teach our children:
Speak truly.
Speak measured.
Keep one name for the world.
Keep one for your kin.
Keep one that even you do not seek too often.
Wholeness is sacred.
Boundaries are kindness.
